I joined members and activists from Liverpool Garston in Makerfield on Thursday for polling day in the by-election that saw Andy Burnham elected by a 9,231 majority on a 58.7% turnout. This convincing result comes just six weeks after Reform took 24 of the 25 council seats in this year’s local elections.

Labour beat Reform into second place this week, winning 54.8% of the vote while Reform took 34.5%, with Labour winning more votes than the rest of the parties standing combined. The warm weather helped us get a great response on the doorstep and it was good to see such a convincing majority come in early on Friday morning.

Attention will now turn to Westminster this week and a potential leadership challenge to Keir Starmer as Prime Minister. A successful challenge would see a timetable drawn up for a leadership election over the coming months.
