Maria Eagle MP A Strong Voice in Tough Times
On Wednesday Rachel Reeves delivered this years Budget, designed to put money back into the pockets of working people and families by putting wages and pensions up while bringing inflation, energy bills and poverty down. It shows Labour is building a stronger and more secure economy, delivering growth after years of decline. It tackles the Tory Cost of Living crisis and alleviates poverty for people of all ages across Liverpool Garston.
We’re saving people money by cutting £150 a year off energy bills alongside a freeze on train and bus fares as well as keeping prescription charges under a tenner with a further freeze.
We’re giving people a pay rise by putting up the Minimum Wage and the National Living Wage. 18-20 year olds will see the Minimum Wage rise to £10.85 an hour and the Living Wage rise to £12.71 an hour. Labour has already raised wages more since the start of this Parliament than the Tories did in ten years from 2010. That’s the difference we make in power.
Our commitment to the Triple Lock delivers for our pensioners, with a 4.8% rise worth £440 extra to existing pensions and £520 to new pensions.
And with the removal of the two-child limit in Universal Credit we’re lifting 450,000 children out of poverty, with 2,280 of those living in Liverpool Garston. We know that a child growing up in poverty is less likely to work as an adult and will earn 25% less aged 30. Too many people are stuck in a cycle of poverty and we’re doing something about it.
That’s on top of 5.2 million more appointments that have seen NHS waiting lists fall month on month, free school breakfast clubs that will raise attainment and cuts to borrowing that have seen interest rates fall five times since Labour took office. There is also the biggest ever boost to Britain’s roads alongside action on rip-off fuel prices at the pumps to help save money for motorists.
This budget delivers on our promise to renew our economy and our communities. It’s real action on the cost of living, making life better for millions of people of all ages across the country. That’s what Labour is delivering in office.
