Labour Best Start

On Tuesday the Labour Government announced our Best Start in Life campaign, which builds on the proud legacy of Sure Start by reviving family services and putting them back at the heart of our communities.

The Tories gutted Sure Start and other vital services for families and won’t bring them back. Their only education policy is the same as Reform’s: cut state budgets to restore private schools’ tax breaks, and Labour won’t stand for that.

We’re driving a sea change on the way that we approach early years, from saving working parents £7,500 per child, per year, by rolling out 30 hours of government-funded childcare and creating new school-based nurseries to ending ‘toddler top-up fees’ to prevent over-charging at nurseries and investing a record uplift to the early years pupil premium.

It’s part of our Plan for Change that will see a record number of children school-ready at the age of five when they go into education. Best Start builds on our wider commitment to families, which includes our Best Start free school breakfast clubs that will save families £450 a year, expanding free school meals to half a million more children and cutting school uniform prices, which will save families £50 on their back-to-school shop.

Better Start is a return to the Sure Start values that did so much for families across the country under the last Labour government and will give children across Liverpool Garston the best chance to thrive and succeed going forward. Only Labour is committed to delivering this vital change.
