I recently visited Rachel and Warren, a husband and wife team who have started their own greetings card business called LoveLossDiscoballs that is expanding from their kitchen table to being stocked in large retailers across the world.

Rachel sadly lost her first husband to suicide six years ago and they have both recently lost parents. Rachel told me that often the traditional sympathy cards she received made her feel worse and, while on her Instagram page LoveLossDiscoballs, she had the idea to produce modern, bright sympathy cards for others going through loss. Warren is a graphic designer by trade and has given up his job to design their cards full time, investing emotionally in each one. As Rachel told me, grieving doesn’t have to be done in the dark and their cards reflect this.

They are already stocked across Liverpool and in retailers like Oliver Bonas in the UK and Barnes & Noble bookstores in America and are looking to scale up into more stores as well as expanding their online business (www.lovelossdiscoballs.co.uk). This week their work was recognised at The Henry’s, the UK’s greeting cards award night where they were nominated as one of the country’s greetings card designers of the year, and they will be featured this Small Business Saturday as one of the country’s 100 most inspiring businesses.

I will be keeping in touch and watching their growth with interest. You can hear more from Rachel and Warren above.
