On Monday two of the schools in my constituency will be amongst the first 750 in England to launch Labour´s promised free school breakfast scheme. Holy Trinity in Garston and Norman Pannell in Belle Vale are early adopters and this week I visited Holy Trinity to hear about how it will be rolled out.

As Headteacher Helen Raley-Williams told me, children who have a good breakfast to start the day have more energy and better concentration than children who come to school hungry. This scheme will make a real difference as it rolls out across Liverpool Garston.

It was also good to meet the different years groups around the school as well as visit their dedicated SEND classrooms where 20 children, from reception to Year 6, can learn in classes designed to meet their needs. I was pleased to hear that all their Year 6 SEND students have got into their chosen secondary school.

Holy Trinity are over-subscribed for the new school intake in September, a good illustration of how well they are doing. I look forward to hearing the difference free school breakfasts make to their students.

180,000 children in schools across the country will benefit from the first wave of the free school breakfast scheme, whereas under the Tories only one in ten primary schools across England offered free breakfasts. This is part of our Plan For Change that will help break down the barriers to opportunity for every child.
