Maria Eagle MP A Strong Voice in Tough Times
This week’s election results have seen massive gains for Labour across the country while the Conservatives have lost a Parliamentary by-election, Mayoral and Police & Crime Commissioner elections in areas they previously held easily and nearly 400 councillors.
Steve Rotheram was re-elected Mayor of Liverpool City Region with 183,932 votes, 687% of the votes cast. It was a fantastic result although turnout was a low 23.2%.
Emily Spurrell was re-elected as Merseyside Police & Crime Commissioner with 152,640 votes, a majority of 117,419 and 61.7% of the vote.
In Halewood South Edna Finneran was returned with a small majority as Councillor, as was Alan Flute who had an easier time in Halewood North. All were great results and I send each of them my congratulations.
Labour’s wins in the Blackpool South by-election and in Mayoral races in places like London, where the Tories expected Sadiq Khan to struggle only for him to trounce them with a majority of over 275,000, and West Midlands, where Tory Mayor Andy Street was projected to win easily but lost out to Labour’s Richard Parker, starkly illustrate that the country has had enough after 14 long years of Conservative rule. In Blackpool South the Tories nearly came third, finishing just 117 votes ahead of the Reform Party.
